It was the fall of 1944 after the D-Day landings in Europe, and the push to regain the Philippines in the Pacific. The war was a frightening time with so many away overseas or deployed around the country. In the face of this darkness, a small group from Concord, who had been worshiping at St. Paul’s Walnut Creek, began their own Sunday evensong. By October they had requested, and been granted, the use of the hall at the Naval Housing Project (now Baldwin Park) for Sunday services. And shortly thereafter they formed a mission congregation in the Diocese of California, and were named St. Michael and All Angels after Bishop Block’s first parish. In 1945 the war finally came to an end, and the world changed again.
